A simple test: imagine achieving your goal. Does it feel exciting and right, or does it feel like an obligation? If you’re doing it for external validation or to impress others, it probably doesn’t align with your core values. Try writing down why each goal matters to you. If you struggle to find a genuine reason that connects to who you are, that’s a signal to reconsider.
Most people do at first. The key is prioritization. Pick 3-5 major goals that genuinely matter to you for the year. You can always add more once you’ve made real progress. Quality focus beats scattered effort every time. Start with what would make the biggest positive difference in your life if you actually accomplished it.
Monthly check-ins keep you on track, and quarterly reviews let you step back and see the bigger picture. Monthly: spend 15-20 minutes looking at your milestones. Did you hit them? What got in the way? Quarterly: celebrate wins, reassess if goals still matter to you, and adjust your approach if needed. This rhythm prevents goals from becoming forgotten New Year’s resolutions.
Goals can absolutely change. Life happens. Your priorities shift. What mattered last year might not matter this year, and that’s okay. The important thing is being intentional about change. Don’t abandon goals on a whim, but don’t cling to them if they no longer feel true to you. Give yourself permission to evolve. That’s growth, not failure.
